What are Helical Piles?

They are called helical piles because of their shape | Photo from Wikipedia

Helical piles are a form of foundational anchor used to support buildings, bridges, decks, and other installations on terrain that wouldn’t normally be suitable to hold such structures.

Sometimes referred to as Screw Piles or Helical Anchors, helical piles feature corkscrew-style bearing plates welded to a long metal shaft. These corkscrew plates help disperse the weight of the load into the dirt without being pushed all the way into the ground as a simple smooth shaft does. Additionally, the helical shape allows for a much easier installation, as the supports can effectively be “screwed” into the earth.

Helical piles are especially well suited for structures on soft or malleable terrain, as they can be drilled deep into the earth and provide a great deal of support.

When it comes to the needs of the homeowner, helical piles for decks provide exceptionally firm support if your deck is raised or constructed on highly variable/insecure soil.

Benefits of Helical Piles

Helical piles for decks like this contribute a great deal of stability, no matter the quality of the soil

Citywide has extensive experience installing helical piles for decks and often recommends them for the following reasons:

  • Easy Installation - The helical shape makes them easy to place or uninstall if you decide to remove the structure they are supporting.

  • Less Soil Displacement - Because you screw helical piles into the ground, less soil is displaced which reduces your environmental impact and overall work.

  • Free Standing - Helical piles don't require any extra concrete bases to hold them.

Great Support for a Great Price

Helical piles provide support to decks no matter what terrain they’re built on

Although there are many other methods for supporting your outdoor projects and constructions, helical piles for decks are constantly used by construction and contracting companies because of how effective and affordable they are.

According to the Helical Pile Association, an organization that aids companies in making informed construction decisions, helical piles are preferred over alternatives like drilled shafts and belled piers for a variety of general and convenience-related reasons:

  • Fast installation

  • Easier to modify

  • Easy to transport

  • Cheaper than other options

Citywide just dug and poured 6 post footings for a deck. They were able to get their Bobcat in through a tight side entrance and then dug the holes, set and aligned the post saddles, and laser leveled the elevations ... The price for the work was slightly less than others and they had better availability. Would recommend Citywide without reservations.

Citywide is amazing! They built a beautiful porch for us which is the envy of all of our neighbors. They were professional, polite and kept us in the loop for the whole process. Looking forward to having them complete some landscaping and fencing for us as well. I would highly recommend!!!

Great work by the guys, in building a deck from the posts to the house we were only out less than half an inch, they know how to measure. Recommend highly.
