Fencing Costs

When it comes to choosing a fence, many people’s minds go to the classic residential wooden fence. Although wooden fencing is indeed a great choice for many situations, you may want to investigate the pros and cons of other fence materials and styles, depending on your specific needs and preferences. Fencing Waterloo Region properties allows for lots of flexibility.

The right fence can be an eye-catching feature of your yard

Other Considerations

In addition to basic considerations regarding material, there are a few other factors that will impact the cost of your fence:

  • Decorative features

  • Fence height

  • Quality of material (e.g. Do you want to use a high-quality, durable wood, like Oak, or a lower quality wood like Pine?)

Remember that the removal of your old fence will also take time and will increase the price accordingly. Check out our detailed guide on fence pricing here.

Always play it safe when it comes to local permits and regulations

Permits & Regulations

Waterloo Region has established bylaws guiding things like fence height, property lines, and more. You can read our detailed article on Waterloo’s local guidelines here.

But whatever you choose to do, there are a few relevant bylaws that will apply to almost any fence you may want to be built on your property:

  • Front yard fences can be a max of 0.9m (3 ft) high

  • Rear and interior side yard fences can be a max of 2.4m (8 ft) high

  • If your lot is on a street corner, the flankage yard fence can be a max of 1.8m (6 ft) high

  • Fencing cannot be built in either the Daylight Visibility Triangle (DLVT) or Driveway Visibility Triangle (DVT)

Also remember that these restrictions apply anytime you “erect a fence,” which the City of Waterloo defines as any time a fence is altered, constructed, relocated, or more than 50% of a fence is replaced.

For safety, driveway fences can’t be built in either of the Visibility Triangles

Common Infractions

Waterloo Region Common Infractions

The City of Waterloo says that some common infractions to the fence bylaw are:

  • Fences built in the daylight visibility triangle

  • Fences that obstruct the visibility of drivers or pedestrians

  • Fences that encroach onto city-owned property

While the lists above highlight some of the most relevant aspects of the bylaw, they are not exhaustive. For a full list of regulations, refer to the official page of the City of Waterloo.

Follow your local bylaws to ensure your fence is up to code

DIY vs Professional

You can either build a fence yourself or contract a trustworthy company to build it for you. If you want to tackle it yourself, you may want to consider these factors:

  • Time Investment - Assuming no delays or unforeseen obstacles, you can expect the construction of a fence to take days of work.

  • Sourcing Materials - Based on the material of the fence you want to build, finding a trustworthy supplier may be difficult, as you’ll want to guarantee that your materials are top quality so your fence lasts a long time.

  • Tools - If you don’t own them already, purchasing all the tools you need to build a fence (such as saws, levels, appropriate nails, or even a post-hole digger) will add a hefty cost on top of your other expenses.

  • Weather - Inclement or seasonal weather will interfere with your construction process.

  • Final Product - Past experience goes a long way in producing a polished end result.

When it comes to fencing Waterloo Region yards, and you want a company that can not only do all the hard work for you but also leave you with a high-quality, professional fence, look no further than Citywide.
