Custom Deck Building

1. Materials You Can Choose: Wood, Vinyl, Composite

You can choose to build your deck from wood, vinyl, or composite materials

Custom deck building gives you the option to choose the type of material you would prefer your deck to be made from wood, vinyl, or composite.

Wood:

Wood is still the most popular choice for decks. It's the least expensive option and it is very easy to work with. You can choose from an incredibly wide range of stains to give your wood deck the look you want while still letting the gorgeous grains shine through.

If you prefer, you can also paint your deck to perfectly match or contrast the exact colour of your home.

Vinyl:

Vinyl decks have come a long way in recent years in their appearance. They are still usually more expensive to purchase than wood, but less expensive than composite.

A higher quality vinyl deck will last for many years and it will be virtually maintenance-free. However, in hot temperatures when it is exposed to the sun, it can become very hot to touch or walk on.

Composite:

Composite decks are made by combining plastics and wood fibres together and then extruding this blended material together to form boards. They contain about 50% wood dust from sawmills that are combined with recycled and virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Composite materials are usually more expensive than both wood and vinyl. However, they are extremely durable and the rougher texture of composite boards also means that you will get better traction than if you walk on a vinyl one. The best part about a composite deck is that it never needs to be painted, sanded, stained, or sealed.

2. Multiple Levels

You can really make your deck interesting and more functional by incorporating multiple levels into your design. For example, if you have a sloping backyard, like the one in the picture below, you can start your deck on the main level and then add one or two more levels that follow the grade of your property.

These multiple levels will not only add extra visual appeal but also help to designate various areas on your deck. The lower area can be used as a great conversation spot with banked seats and a cozy fire pit, while the upper areas could be used for outdoor dining or sunbathing.

Multiple deck levels can also give you access to the outdoors from upper-storey bedrooms. If you have a deck off your second-floor master, you can easily go outside and enjoy your private space any time you like.

In addition, an upper-level deck that has steps that lead to a lower deck or right to the ground also gives you the extra security of an additional fire escape route.

3. Decorative Inserts

A great way to really customize your deck is by including decorative fence inserts (fencerts). Fencerts are a beautiful option for a privacy screen around your deck. You can have one custom designed and they can be easily mounted into a traditional wood privacy fence.

You can choose from a smaller fencert to accent your privacy screen, or the fencert can be the entire screen. They can even be incorporated as an ornamental topper that goes around the entire length of your privacy fence.

4. Stairs and Railings

Stairs:

Custom deck building allows you to have options when it comes to the design of the stairs on your deck. You can decide to have a designated spot for a smaller set of stairs leading off your deck from any side or corner you want.

If you prefer a more open feel, you could have the entire front of your deck be on a wide stairway leading to the ground or to another level of your deck.

Railings:

Custom deck building railings also come in a wide variety of styles and colours. You can choose a more traditional look by installing a beautiful wood railing on your wood deck or you can mix it up.

You don't have to have your railings exactly match the floor of your deck. How about having a solid white railing on a dark grey deck for a great contrast or a striking black railing on a chestnut colour deck?

You could also install a vinyl or composite deck and have ornamental iron railings in a contrasting colour. You can mix it up by choosing more than one colour for your railing.

For example, the posts, inner and top rails on your railing could be white while the inner, smaller rungs could be black.

5. Pergolas and Awnings

Pergolas:

Pergolas are a great addition to any deck. They not only provide a slightly shaded area to sit under, but they can also add beauty and curb appeal to your deck. They could even be used for hanging some outdoor plants in baskets or training some ivy or other climbing plant to grow along them for extra shade and adornment.

Awnings:

If your deck is located in a very sunny spot, you can also install a retractable awning to give you extra shade or full sun whenever you want it.

You can choose an inexpensive awning that you manually operate or you can get an automated one. The nice thing about a retractable awning is that you don't have to take it down in the winter.
